No Beauty Without Danger / by Chris Hall

No one has ever written, painted, sculpted, modeled, built, or invented except literally to get out of hell.  Antonin Artaud.

That might have been true, to some extent, in Antonin Artaud’s lifetime, but I just don’t see it today.

I am tired of seeing so much safe art… art that is neither politically nor spiritually challenging.  Art should be about the pain and pathos of the human condition, and its transcendence.  Give me the grit of life!  No more feel good, cotton candy confetti and cat pillow crap art!  No more art as comfort chair!  No more serene landscapes, no more weird for weird’s sake, safe art!  Weird isn’t dangerous anymore.
